Founded by breast surgeon Dr. Virginia Maurer in 1995, the Maurer Foundation has a concise motto: "to save lives." A nonprofit, the foundation's driving goal is to educate women on the importance of the early detection and treatments for breast cancer through various educational and informational programs through schools, community centers and businesses.
The foundation also focuses on adolescent women though high school outreach programs. The organization has grown from just over 1,000 people at its outset to "hundreds of thousands" today.
