Jowonio means 'to set free' in the language of the Onondaga Nation, which reflects the mission of The Jowonio School: to free children to learn and grow without stereotypes and prejudice. Jowonio is a nonprofit school that offers both pre-school and kindergarten programs for children at a variety of ability levels. With a faculty that consists of more than 60 teachers, therapists, social workers and psychologists, Jowonio enrolls more than 140 students, a third of which are considered special-needs children. The school was established with 15 students in 1969 by a group of parents seeking an alternative to public school education.
