UFT Welfare Fund, is operated by the United Federation of Teachers, which is also known as UFT. The United Federation of Teachers works as a bargaining agent for various nonsupervisory educators in the New York City public, private and charter schools. The organization represents more than 89,000 teachers and over 17,000 classroom paraprofessionals. It also represents school secretaries, guidance counselors, psychologists, social workers, education evaluators and laboratory technicians. The organization was founded in 1960 as Local 2. In addition, the United Federation of Teachers represents nearly 2,700 registered nurses. The organization is affiliated with the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) and American Federation of Teachers (AFT).
