Hempstead Lake State Park is comprised of Hempstead Lake, McDonald Pond, South Pond, 20 tennis courts, children's playgrounds, basketball courts, a softball field, picnic areas, a historical wooden carousel and trails for horseback riding, running, biking and hiking. A picnic pavilion, party room, both located near the carousel, are available for rent for large groups. Hempstead Lake, which is considered the largest lake in Nassau County, can be used for boating with an annual park permit and catch-and-release fishing. Swimming is prohibited. In the fall, the ponds are stocked with trout and the park hosts fishing tournaments, family festivals and demonstrations. Other fish lurking in the park's waters include sunfish, carp, tiger muskies, large mouth bass, chain pickerel, black crappie and perch. The park permits dogs in certain areas of the park provided they are on a leash that is no longer than six feet. The park charges fees for permits, vehicles entering the facility and for use of the carousel and tennis courts.
