For the first 25 years after Gyrodyne Company of America was founded in 1946, the company was engaged in the design, testing, development and production of coaxial helicopters primarily for the United States Navy. Following the elimination of the company s helicopter manufacturing business in 1975, the company began converting its vacant manufacturing facilities and established its rental property operation. The group's principal activity is to lease industrial and commercial real estate to diversified companies in New York. Gyrodyne owns more than 300 acres, primarily zoned for light industry, and has approximately 180,000 square feet of rental space and 60 tenants. It is also a passive investor in citrus grove partnerships. Gyrodyne Company of American is headquartered in St. James, N.Y.
