President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a prominent figure in the Dutchess County community throughout his lifetime. His museum and presidential library covers all aspects of his and his family's life through Hyde Park history. Best and Worst Times to go to the FDR Library and Museum
The FDR museum is an extremely popular attraction due to its broad appeal. Weekends are especially busy. The best time to visit would be early on a weekday. If a Saturday or Sunday are the only days available to visit, earlier in the day would be best. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from November to March and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily from April to October.
Must See/Do at the FDR Library and Museum
All visitors are able to choose whether they want to tour the Roosevelt house, explore the museum, explore the grounds, or a combination of all. A tour of Springwood, FDR's home, is a must for first-time visitors. The museum's permanent collection is a fascinating look into the life and times of one of America's most beloved Presidents. Visitors should be sure to check out Roosevelt's personal automobile, which is famous for its use of hand controls specially designed by Roosevelt himself. The grounds are a welcome respite from the sometimes crowded museum and visitors are able to visit the gravesite of both Roosevelt and his wife, Eleanor.
Admission To the FDR Library and Museum
A combination ticket which allows visitors to tour both the house and museum is $18.00. This ticket is valid for two days. If visitors wish to only see the museum, that ticket is $9.00. There is a senior rate for those over age 62 for $6.00. Children ages 15 and below are free. The museum grounds and hiking trails are completely free.
Parking and Public Transportation to the FDR Library and Museum
The museum boasts a large parking lot that is able to accommodate vehicles of all sizes, including RVs. There is no fee to park. Visitors are also able to use Metro-North to the Poughkeepsie Train Station and catch a ride on the Roosevelt Ride Free Shuttle. This will drop visitors off at the museum, as well as the Vanderbilt Mansion, Eleanor Roosevelt's Val-Kill, and Top Cottage, FDR's personal retreat.
Food at the FDR Library and Museum
Uncle Sam's Canteen is an on-site café in which visitors can grab a snack or lunch. It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Picnicking is also available on the grounds. Visitors are also able to dine off-site at establishments such as the Everready Diner, Hyde Park Brewery, or Coppola's.
Insider Tip for Visitors to the FDR Library and Museum
The hiking trails on the grounds of the museum connect to the Hyde Park Trail. This is a 10-mile and growing trail system that connects several historic sites, including Vanderbilt Mansion and Val-Kill. There is a trail map available at the visitor center of the museum.
