The Emergency Communications Department is governed by Monroe County in New York. The department is the point of central reception and response to 9-1-1 dialed calls, dispatch of emergency equipment and transfer of service calls to various public service agencies. It makes more than 1 million dispatches to police, fire and emergency services each year. The Emergency Communications Department coordinates the participation of public service agencies and administers subscriber agreements. The department develops long-range plans for system development and enhancement and utilizes the 9-1-1 Operating Practices Board, which includes government, private sectors, and citizen representatives. It is administered by the Public Safety department, which provides budgetary review, grant coordination, technical assistance, planning guidance and training services.
