The Covanta Huntington Resource Recovery Facility makes energy from waste. It began serving the towns of Huntington and Smithtown in 1991. The facility sits on 13 acres and processes 750 tons per day of solid waste, which generates up to 25 megawatts of renewable energy that is sold to Long Island Power Authority. The facility is part of an integrated solid waste management system for communities where land-filling is prohibited by state law.
