History
In 1996, a group of local volunteers in Somers,NY believed the community needed a YMCA. In December 1998, the Board of Governors of the YMCA of Central and Northern Westchester voted to establish the Community YMCA of Northern Westchester as one of its official branches and a non-facility YMCA opened to provide childcare programs, a summer aquatics program and a program office. In 2000 volunteers from the Community YMCA attempted a capital campaign to build a create a YMCA facility. Approximately $1.7 million dollars was raised but the events of 9/11/01 all but evaporated any additional capital contributions for a new YMCA. Today, the Community Y is stronger than ever and fully committed to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living & social responsibility.
