Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is a research and educational institution that focuses on cancer, neurobiology, plant genetics, genomics and bio-informatics. This research and education institution is responsible for nurturing many well-known scientific minds, such as George Shull, creator of the first hybrid corn, ancestor of today s sweet corn. The laboratory also features a publication division that produces several scientific journals and books, many of which focus on genetic research. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory began as the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences biological laboratory in 1890. It maintains facilities in Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.
