Founded in 1982, City Harvest is one of the world s first food rescue organizations. It collects excess food from several segments of the food industry, including restaurants, grocers, corporate cafeterias, manufacturers and farms and then delivered free of charge to more than 600 community food programs throughout New York using a fleet of nearly 15 trucks and bikes, as well as volunteers on foot. Each week, City Harvest helps over 260,000 individuals. The organization has partnerships with American Express, Babcock & Brown, Bearing Point, Beech-Nut, BlackRock, B.R. Guest Restaurants, and Bushwick Commission Company. City Harvest is a member of Feeding America. It has a staff of more than 80 employees and nearly 1,800 volunteers. City Harvest delivers food to soup kitchens, food pantries, AIDS care providers, and senior and children s day care centers.
