Citi Field is a stadium located in New York City, New York, in the Queens borough. Citi Field is currently home to the MLB team the New York Mets. The stadium opened on April 13, 2009 with the construction taking just over a two and a half years at a cost of just over $900 million, about $989 million in today’s dollars. The stadium replaced the iconic and aging Shea Stadium. Controversy started when Citigroup bought the naming rights in 2006, to the dismay of fans, which preferred Shea Stadium name to carry over to the new stadium.
The New York Mets are two time World Series Champions and are members of the East Division of the National League within MLB. They are known by their team colors consisting of blue, orange and white. The current owner of the Mets is Fred Wilpon.
The stadium currently holds 41,922 fans. There are numerous luxury suites and over 1,600 of seats at the club level. Currently, it is the fifth largest stadium in MLB in terms of seating capacity.
