The China Institute runs a small gallery in New York devoted to both traditional and contemporary art and culture. Each year, the China Institute Gallery presents two exhibitions, each accompanied by an in-depth scholarly catalogue. Past exhibits have included calligraphy, ceramics, bronzes, painting, decorative arts, architecture, photography, textiles and contemporary art.
Best and worst times to go to the China Institute Gallery
The best time to see the Gallery is when admission is free admission from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday.
Note that the gallery is closed for the remainder of 2015 and will reopen in 2016 with a show called "Art of the Mountain: Through the Chinese Photographer's Lens."
Must see/do at the China Institute Gallery
Each exhibition offers a new and different set of must-sees. What unites all of the exhibits is an intimate, first-class exploration of a specific theme related to Chinese art and culture throughout the last 5,000 years of Chinese history.
Admission to the China Institute Gallery
When an exhibit is on display, the China Institute Gallery is open Monday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 8 p.m. The Gallery is closed in between exhibitions and on major holidays.
Admission is $7 for adults, $4 for students and seniors (with valid ID), and free for children under 12 and for members of the China Institute, the Asia Society, and Channel Thirteen. Admission is free to all during the extended hours from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday.
Parking and Public Transportation to the China Institute Gallery
The China Institute does not have public parking, although there is limited street parking and parking garages in the neighborhood.
By subway, take the F train to Lexington Avenue & 63rd Street; or take the 4, 5, 6, N or R to 59th Street & Lexington Avenue.
By bus, take the M101, M102, M103 to 65th Street & Third Avenue if headed uptown and to 65th Street & Lexington Avenue if headed downtown; take the M66 to Lexington Avenue & 68th/67th Street if headed crosstown.

The China Institute does not have a café or cafeteria for visitors to the Gallery.
