Ausable Chasm in Plattsburgh, N.Y., is a uniquely carved, vertical-walled canyon made from 500 million year old Potsdam sandstone cliffs. It opened to tourists in 1870 and is one of the earliest and oldest attractions in the United States. The canyon was carved by the Ausable River, rising in the Adirondack Mountains and is two meters long, 20 to 50 feet wide and 100 to 200 feet deep. Guided evening lantern tours of Ausable Chasm and camping facilities are offered. Attractions near the chasm include Santa's Workshop, Olympic venues of Lake Placid, Fort Ticonderoga, Whiteface Memorial Highway, High Falls Gorge, Howe Caverns, natural stone and bridge caves, horseback riding at the Bark Eater, Tiger Stripe Paintball, Six Flags Great Escape, 1812 Homestead, Lake Champlain Transportation, the Depot Theatre, Natural Stone Bridge and Caves, Parc Safari, Champlain Valley Transportation Museum, Adirondack Museum, Adirondack Train Adventures, Howe Caverns and Upper Hudson River Railroad.
