The 150-room Athenaeum Hotel sits grandly on a tree-shaded hill overlooking Chautauqua Lake. It is said to be the largest wooden building in the eastern US, and was built in the Second Empire style in 1881. The hotel is located on the grounds of Chautauqua Institution who has offered over 140 years of summer programming in the arts, education, religion and recreation. Founded in 1874, the internationally acclaimed institution offers interactive education in the fine and performing arts, religion, and the humanities to more than 100,000 annual visitors. Throughout Chautauqua Institution's summer season, Athenaeum Hotel guests are inspired by a variety of learning, recreational and entertainment programs that are all part of the unique Chautauqua experience. For 145 summers, people have come to Chautauqua's 750-acre community to experience arts, classes, concerts, lectures and lively discussions. The Chautauqua Institution gate pass, which is necessary for hotel guests, gives you access to most of the 35 other events that are offered each day in the open-air Chautauqua Amphitheater During the spring and fall months, the Athenaeum Hotel acts as a host to well-organized conferences, beautiful weddings, special events and guests that appreciate the beauty of Chautauqua Institution during the spring and fall. A Chautauqua Institution gate pass is not needed during these months.
