SOFIA: Supporting Our Families Interested in Adoption An Adoptive Family Support and Social Group Who is SOFIA? Formerly known as FIA, Families Interested in Adoption, was established in 1973 as an international adoptive family support group. This early group was known to provide support to orphanages and abandoned children worldwide. FIA later evolved to supporting pre and post adoptive families in all types of adoptions. Today, SOFIA has become the adoptive family support group in association with Adoption STAR, a New York State Authorized, Florida and Ohio Licensed Non-Profit Adoption Agency. With past FIA members, as well as adoption STAR families, SOFIA has become a beautiful blend of adoptive families with children of all ages, races, and backgrounds from many different types of adoptions. In Addition, SOFIA embraces members who are anxiously waiting to become adoptive parents, with support and information to help during the waiting process. SOFIA believes that support is critical to achieving the goal of finding permanent, stable, loving families for children, as well as maintaining those families who have already adopted. Parents need information that will strengthen their families and enable them to handle the challenges of adoptive parenthood. SOFIA Mission SOFIA's mission is to welcome families involved in all typed of adoption, including private, agency, international, foster care, or kinship. SOFIA supports adoptive families in all stages of adoption. The support group offers information and education to adoptive families and the community at-large. Please feel free to email the group leaders at sofia@adoptionstar.com with questions or with a request for support.
