The South Orange Symphony holds three to four free concerts per year at South Orange Middle School (SOMS). The orchestra also performs at fundraisers. Amateur musicians are welcome but must audition for seats. The Symphony awards scholarships to student string players, providing private lessons, and is funded by patrons and advertisers.
The group has about 50 members and rehearses every Tuesday at SOMS from 7:30pm - 9:30pm. Some members are from South Orange and Maplewood, but musicians also come from as far as Pennsylvania and Jersey Shore. Robert Helmacy has been the conductor since 1972.
The group sponsors a yearly Artist Competition. Winners are awarded $500 upon performing a solo on their instrument at a regularly scheduled performance. Call 973-729-5275 for membership queries.
