The Berkeley Township Municipal Building is the hub of all township government operations. It's located about equidistant from the Bayville section of the township and the western portions, where most of the senior citizen villages are located.
Berkeley Township was incorporated in 1875. It is approximately 41.9 square miles, or 26,816 acres. The township is located in the central section of Ocean County. Its eastern borders include South Seaside Park section, the Atlantic Ocean and Barnegat Bay. Roughly 72 percent of the township's land area is within the Pinelands National Reserve and roughly 38 percent is in the state's Pinelands Area. The township includes the following sections - South Seaside Park, Bayville, Pinewald, Manitou Park and Pelican Island in Barnegat Bay, Holiday City, Silver Ridge Park. Silver Ridge Park North, Silver Ridge Park West, Holiday City at Berkeley, Holiday City South, Holiday City Carefree, Holiday City West and Holiday Heights.
The township operates under the state's Faulkner Act, with a mayor elected for a four-year term and a seven-member Township Council. Jason J. Varano has been the mayor for the past 15 years. Council members include Judith Noonan, Francis Siddons, Karen Davis, Nathan Abbe, Anne Wolf and Carmen Amato.
