It is easy to measure success as an uncomplicated hospital stay or resolution of the problem. I believe it takes more than that in this line of work. A successful outcome includes helping to foster a patient’s positive outlook and helping to improve their quality of life. When patients find out they need cardiac surgery, it can be a scary time for them. My goal is to help them understand their disease and how medicine and surgery will work to improve their lives. Understanding this often helps ease their fear and anxiety. I see patients on some of the hardest days of their lives. It is an incredible privilege to be a part of their transition back to good health.
