Established in 1917, the Nevada Department of Transportation works to provide a safe state highway system. The department is responsible for the planning, construction, operation and maintenance of the more than 5,400 miles of highways and over 1,000 bridges. It is divided into three districts, with a district engineer and assistant engineers in each. The Nevada Department of Transportation also oversees various allied projects from the Adopt-A-Highway program for the maintenance of state historical markers. The department maintains offices in Las Vegas, as well as Reno and Elko, Nev. The Nevada Department of Transportation is headquartered in Carson City, Nev.
