History
After 50 years of abandonment, the schoolhouse was reopened as a museum in 1986. The non-profit Historic Fourth Ward School Foundation has overseen the preservation of the building and operated the museum and gift shop since 2000.

The school building is the last one standing of its kind in the United States. Step back into time in the 1876 Victorian four-storied wooden schoolhouse complete with original desk, books, maps, student graffiti, and wear and tear of thousands of students who were educated there for 60 years. Don't forget to ask the gift shop attendant if you can ring the bell.
