Established in 1917, the Elko Police Department preserves peace, enforces laws, protects residents lives and property and arrests violators of the law. It also prevents and deters crime. The department maintains a patrol division that handles traffic accidents and routine police matters that include crossing guard duties, bank escorts, funeral processions and parades. The division also responds to calls related to animal control and various animal-related crimes. Located in Elko, Nev., the Elko Police Department employs a staff of more than 40 sworn officers, civilians and volunteers. It has the Elko Special Response Team (ERST), which deals with high-risk and dangerous situations, including barricaded persons, high-risk warrant arrests, explosive devices and heavily-armed criminals. The Elko Police Department supports a cadet program that educates youths to learn tactics, procedures, laws and other daily duties of police officers.
