The Bostwick Irrigation District is located in Red Cloud, NE and serves the south-central Nebraska and north-central Kansas regions. It encompasses the Republican River and features the Harlan County Dam and Lake, Lovewell Dam and Reservoir, diversion dams, pumping plants, and a network of canals, laterals, and drains. With a total of 104,240 irrigable acres, the district provides flood control, irrigation, sediment control, fish and wildlife enhancement, and recreational opportunities for the surrounding communities. The history of the Bostwick Division dates back to the post-Civil War era when settlement and development in the Republican River Basin began. The residents faced challenges such as floods, droughts, and economic depression, leading to the need for land and water resource management. In response, the Federal Government conducted studies and surveys, and the Bureau of Reclamation initiated construction in 1948. By 1957, the Nebraska portion of the division was mostly complete, and the structures in Kansas were nearing completion. The Bostwick Irrigation District was formed in Nebraska in 1948, followed by the Kansas-Bostwick Irrigation District No. 2 in 1951.
