Valier is a town in Pondera County, Montana, United States. The population was 498 at the 2000 census. Valier is a quiet rural town bordering beautiful Lake Frances. The lake features great Walleye, Northern Pike and Perch fishing year around and is large enough to accommodate all water sports including wind surfing and sailing. Lakeshore camping is available. The campground is equipped with bathrooms, playground, picnic tables, electrical hookups, a fish cleaning station and an RV dump. There is also a Fireman's Pavilion where dances, receptions, family reunions and various other activities can be held. Take a guided horseback ride or hunt pheasant, upland or migratory game birds and deer. All this is within the spectacular view of the Rocky Mountains. Agriculture is the key industry in the area, featuring world renowned Black Angus and Hereford ranches along with three Hutterite colonies. Valier is near the Lewis and Clark Trail and the interpretive signage about the Meriwether Lewis fight site. With Valier as its midpoint, Highway 44 is the quickest route between Glacier National Park and Great Falls, connecting I-15 and Highway 89. Valier's local airport has a 3000' grass landing strip, plus water planes can land on the lake. Summer activities include a Homesteader day celebration held on the 4th Saturday in June each year. There is a parade,food and craft vendors, co-ed softball, horse events, and a dance. Other special events include the Fireman's Ice Fishing Derby every February on the weekend of the Presidents Day holiday and the annual Christmas Stroll in early December. A motel, bed and breakfast, bars and restaurants, and grocery stores, specialty shops are all here for your enjoyment and comfort. The town also has a modern library, medical clinic, bank, and school system.
The town was named for Peter Valier, who supervised construction of the Montana Western Railway's railroad line between Valier and Conrad, the county seat of Pondera County.
