St. Mary Lodge & Resort, in St. Mary, Mont., is known as 'The Resort at Glacier'. The resort on Glacier Lake has seen many changes and improvements since it was founded in 1932. The lodge started as one-room cabins. They would rent the cabins at noon while the carpenters were still working on them. They built more every year until they had more than 40 one-room cabins with wood stoves and water pails. In 1952 the lodge, which housed 27 new rooms, the gift shop and the new St. Mary Caf , was opened. The Great Bear Lodge, with its 48 luxury rooms opened in 2001. These spacious rooms feature satellite TV, wet bars, view decks, unique furnishings and upscale amenities. Suites are also available with fireplaces, Jacuzzi tubs and large living areas. The Great Bear Lodge is the first major addition of upscale rooms to the region since the construction of the original park hotels in the 1920's. St. Mary Lodge is a family-owned operation and has been since the opening of its one-room cabins.
