History
Founded in 1985, the Southwest Center for Independent Living opened its doors in 1986 as a private non-profit civil rights organization. SCIL upholds the same core philosophies followed by over 400 Centers for Independent Living (CIL) in the United States.

Choices and Empowerment for People with Disabilities! As an independent living center, Southwest Center for Independent Living (SCIL) provides services to all people with disabilities including personal attendant services, advocacy, information & referral, peer support, independent living skills, and a variety of programs to increase independence. SCIL's philosophy is one of individual control--Nothing About Me, Without Me! The concept that people with disabilities know their own needs best and have the right to make decisions regarding their daily lives is the basis for everything SCIL does. SCIL's mission is to promote a barrier-free environment for all individuals with disabilities through public education and advocacy for social change, and to provide a full range of services which will assist each individual in meeting their goals for independence. SCIL serves the following 8 counties in southwest Missouri - Christian, Dallas, Greene, Lawrence, Polk, Stone, Taney & Webster.
