NAMI is committed to improving the lives of people with mental illness and serves anyone affected by these illnesses. Severe mental illnesses are catastrophic diseases with unknown causes and cures, but treatment can be effective. They often strike young people in their most productive years and can devastate families emotionally, physically, and financially. People with mental illness deserve appropriate care; but because of stigma and discrimination, many are not able to access needed treatment, services, education, housing, and employment opportunities.
