The Office of Pipeline Safety, also known as OPS, assures the safe transportation of natural gas, petroleum and other hazardous materials through pipeline in the United States. The office develops regulations for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of pipeline facilities. It is operated by the Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration. The Office of Pipeline Safety operates various drug and alcohol testing programs. The office offers pipeline inspection and law enforcement services. With a staff of more than 75 people, it has regional offices in New Jersey, Georgia, Missouri, Texas and Colorado. The Office of Pipeline Safety is responsible for granting special permits and state waivers.
