One of the first water treatment and distribution systems west of the Mississippi River was developed by Missouri American Water s predecessors in St. Joseph, Mo. The company has been providing drinking water to Missouri residents since the late 1880s. It provides water and wastewater services to approximately 440,000 water customers in 109 municipalities across the state that rely on the company for service to homes, businesses and industries. Missouri American Water operates under rules and regulations established by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
