Headquartered in the J. Edgar Hoover Building in Washington, D.C., the Federal Bureau of Investigation is a government agency that consists of special agents and support personnel who work to organize and coordinate investigative activities throughout the world. The FBI s mission is to protect and defend the United States against terrorist and foreign intelligence threats, to uphold and enforce the criminal laws of the U.S. and to provide leadership and criminal justice services to federal, state, municipal and international agencies and partners. Headquarters personnel determine investigative priorities, distribute information, oversee major cases and manage the organization s resources, technology and staff. The FBI is the focal point for intelligence from around the country, from the CIA and various foreign countries. The organization has more than 55 field offices and 400 satellite offices, which are known as resident agencies, such as the one in Saint Louis.
