Crawford Electric is a member-owned, nonprofit rural electric cooperative with a five-county service area in east-central Missouri. Its facilities are based in Bourbon, Mo. Crawford Electric was established to provide reliable, affordable electric service to rural areas that had been deemed 'unprofitable' by the investor-owned utilities. Its member-owners have control over the assets and operations of the co-op through voting and electing members to serve on the cooperative's board of directors. Electric cooperatives nationwide represent an industry with assets of more than $70 billion, employing more than 60,000 people in the United States, own and operate more than 2.3 million miles of line and serving 13 million businesses, homes, schools, churches, farms, irrigation systems and other establishments representing more than 34 million people.
