Kansas City International Airport MCI is an airport in Platte County, Missouri. MCI is situated approximately 15 miles northwest of Kansas City’s city center. The airport consistently moves just above 10 million passengers annually. Constructions on the airport began in 1953 after the Great Flood of 1951, the airport was named Mid-Continent International Airport. In 1966 the Downtown Airport was voted to join Mid-Continent International. In 1972 the airport was annexed by the city and renamed Kansas City International Airport.
