Founded in 1902, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History collects, preserves and provides access to the archival resources of the state. The department administers museums and historic sites, as well as oversees programs for historic preservation throughout the state. It operates through administration, archives and library, historic properties, museum and records management divisions. The Mississippi Department of Archives and History also has a historic preservation division that provides technical assistance services and grants for preservation projects. In addition, the department maintains an archives and library division that oversees the state archives and public reading rooms where documents, photographs and other items from the collection are available. The department maintains a location in Jackson, Miss.
