Originally established as a member of the now-defunct American Football League, the Minnesota Vikings franchise forfeited its AFL membership to become the National Football League s 14th team. The team began play in 1961 and has since appeared in four Super Bowls all losses and won 16 division championships. The Vikings have also inducted seven players Carl Eller, Jim Finks, Bud Grant, Paul Krause, Alan Page, Fran Tarkenton and Ron Yary into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Though based in Eden Prairie, Minn., the Vikings play at the 63,000-capacity Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis. The team s fans are known for wearing purple Viking helmets called Helga Hats and chanting the Vikings fight song during games.
