The Minnesota Department of Corrections, founded in 1959, is responsible for the provision of assistance and guidance in the management of criminal justice programs and facilities. The department operates more than eight correctional facilities. It serves a population of more than 9,200 inmates. The Minnesota Department of Corrections also publishes a monthly newsletter, Hotline. The department manages a community services division that is responsible for the inspection and licensing of state and local correctional facilities. In addition, it operates a facility services division that oversees clinical supervision for medical, nursing, dental care and behavioral health services. The Minnesota Department of Corrections manages a support services division.
