The Prospect Place Family Shelter Program serves homeless women, men and their children. It provides temporary housing assistance and case management and supportive services, such as employability and educational support, child care and therapeutic services and substance abuse treatment. Located in Ypsilanti, Mich., the program is operated by SOS Community Services, which is a nonprofit organization that serves homeless families and others experiencing housing-related crises. Founded in 1970, its housing crisis services include housing relocation, eviction prevention, shelter location and utility assistance, distribution of emergency food and personal care items, housing-related transportation assistance and referrals to other community resources. In addition, the organization provides employability support that includes a biannual, two-week course and one-on-one instruction on the correct ways to fill out applications, post resumes online and document work history. It also includes instruction on interviewing and communication skills, conflict resolution, and work attitude and ethic.
