History

In 1996, Oshtemo Township, Kalamazoo Public Library, and a volunteer staff set up a book station to determine interest in branch library services. The station moved to the old Hurd School on W. Main St. and was formally designated a branch library in 1973. The current branch library opened November 1, 1997. Designed to appeal to children and the young at heart, it features colorful, basic geometric forms. The 18,000 sq. ft. building sits on a ten-acre prairie planted with native grasses and flowers that adjoins the Oshtemo Township Park.

WE LOVE THIS LIBRARY! The space is small, but the staff and offerings are mighty! We don't venture downtown as much as we used to; we still love the main library branch. However, parking is a...

What a lovely building ... it's got some turrets that make it look a little like a castle, there's gorgeous tile work in the entryway and beautiful wooded views. Smaller than the big branches but...

Washington Square Branch of Kalamazoo Public Library

HistoryLibrary services to Kalamazoo's south side opened in 1910 in the basement of the old Portage Street School and later moved to a store front on Portage St. The present British Arts & Crafts-style building was dedicated in 1927. Restoration of this neighborhood treasure in 1996-97 included updated electrical and HVAC, a new lift to help patrons reach the community meeting room, and new ADA-compliant restrooms. The library site was recontoured to facilitate better drainage and the 42-car parking lot was finally repaved--possibly the most popular improvement!
