The Meijer Distribution Center is a subsidiary of Meijer. The first Meijer grocery store was opened in Greeneville, Mich., in 1934 with $338.76 worth of merchandise. After opening several local grocery stores over the next 30 years, the company underwent a transformation in 1962 when it opened its first Meijer Thrifty Acres location, a food and general merchandise store, which many consider the birth of the one-stop shopping center. Meijer s stores have since grown into superstores, which feature more than 40 departments, such as electronics, outdoor living, toys, home and workshop. With its headquarters in Grand Rapids, Mich., the company has more than 150 stores throughout the Midwest. Each store is open 24 hours a day, 364 days a year, closing only for Christmas. Each store also features a pharmacy and a film-processing center. The Meijer Distribution Center maintains a location in Lansing, Mich.
