"The Lansing Symphony Orchestra was formed in 1929 and is widely recognized as one of mid-Michigan s cultural gems. The organization features a roster of professional musicians, a committed Board, an active group of volunteers and a dedicated staff. Each year, we reach over 20, 000 people through inspiring performances and educational programs. The 2010/2011 season marks Timothy Muffitt s fifth year as Music Director of the Lansing Symphony. Timothy Muffitt succeeded Music Director Emeritus Gustav Meier, who served as Music Director of the Lansing Symphony for twenty-seven seasons. In its 81st season, the Lansing Symphony is proud to present a wide variety of musical performances, ranging from our MasterWorks Series, which presents world-class guest artists and great works of the orchestral repertoire, to our Pops Series, which each year brings new audiences to the orchestra through popular music and exciting programming. Our Chamber Series, featuring small ensembles performing in intimate settings, brings the music closer to you. The Lansing Symphony Big Band plays the music of America s Greatest Generation, from Cole Porter to George Gershwin and much more. Once again, we are proud to collaborate with the MSU College of Music for Franz Joseph Haydn s Lord Nelson Mass at the beautiful St. Mary Cathedral. In addition to presenting the finest in orchestral performances, the Lansing Symphony Orchestra is committed to taking an active role in the development of music education programming for our community. Throughout the season, we will present programs for area youth, including two free Young People s Concerts at the Wharton Center, in-school performances, open rehearsals, opportunities to perform Side-by-Side with the orchestra at our Holiday Pops, and our annual Symphony Youth Competition."
