First organized in 1976, the Sault Tribe-Chippewa Indians Housing Authority provides safe, affordable housing opportunities for the members of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians. The organization was formed to remedy existing unsafe and unsanitary housing conditions, alleviate the shortage of sanitary dwellings for persons of low income and provide employment opportunities through the construction, reconstruction, improvement, extension, alteration or repair and operation of the low-income dwellings. The organization also provides loss prevention cirriculums, as well as promotes self-sufficiency, healthy lifestyles and strong communities. Additionally, the authority assists residents in obtaining assistance with various tribal, state and community social service agencies. The Sault Tribe-Chippewa Indians Housing Authority maintains offices in Kincheloe, Mich.
