The Swampscott Housing Authority provides safe, comfortable and affordable housing for those who qualify.
In the most recent town report by the authority's chairman, for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2009, he reported that due to fiscal constraints placed upon housing authorities by the commonwealth, no housing modernization projects were being done, except in emergencies.
The waiting list was so long for two-bedroom apartments that the authority stopped taking applications in the last fiscal year. It opened up its waiting list for three-bedroom units for 10 days in September and received 50 applications.
The authority has an executive director and five members, four of whom are elected. The other member is appointed.
