History
James Monroe Pierce was born February of 1853 in Peru, Ma. He was a brick mason and painter by trade and opened a paint and wall paper store with a partner under the firm name, Pierce and Rolfe, selling paints and wallpapers. In 1898 Mr. Pierce bought out his partner and carried on the business. James' son Hugh pierce worked in his father's business until he took over running the store when his father retired. It was said to be one of the finest stores for the handling of paints and wall paper in Western Mass. We don't know the full extent of all the changes that happened from there until now. What we do know is that at some point it left the family but kept the name becoming Pierce's Paint Store, then becoming Pierce's Art Store. Then in 1984 Pierce's Art Store was bought by William Muller who changed the name to Guild Art Supply after the graphic design firm he owned. But to keep the tradition alive the frame shop became it's own satellite business now known as Pierce's Frameshop.
