Established in 1974, the Office of the Bar Counsel, also known as OBC, is an independent administrative body that works to investigate, evaluate and prosecute complaints against lawyers. The office is responsible for protecting the public from unethical conduct by lawyers and to preserve and enhance the integrity and high standards of the bar. It also works to investigate and respond to the complaints of unethical conduct by attorneys. The Office of the Bar Counsel is responsible for providing information on the bar disciplinary process and alternative remedies. It is responsible for participating in bar association and continuing legal education programs on ethics and practice management. The office is governed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
