Led by Police Chief Howard Mintz, the Newton Police Department protects and serves the City of Newton with detective, traffic and community service bureaus. The department, which is located next to Newton District Court, also handles permits for parking, peddling and parties as well as licenses for firearms. The department's community service bureau supports and responds to citizens needing help with juvenile issues, domestic abuse, civil rights violations and elder affairs. In addition to the full-time police force, an auxiliary police force also operates in conjunction with the department with 40 volunteer officers. Newton Police Headquarters is a short walk from the West Newton MBTA Commuter Rail station (purple line, Framingham/Worcester line). The #553 and #554 MBTA buses also stop nearby at the intersection of Washington and Highland streets.
