Hunnewell Elementary School on Cameron Place is named after Horatio Hollis Hunnewell, a prominent banker, philanthropist and amateur botanist who died in 1902. Many town institutions still bear the Hunnewell name, and Wellesley itself is named after his estate. The elementary school teaches 305 students, with 16 classroom teachers and 23 faculty members in total. The school participates in the state's METCO (Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity), an initiative that invites urban students to attend schools outside their district. Visit the Hunnewell Elementary Web site for more information about the school, which is currently under the leadership of principal Sheryl Boris-Schacter.
