History
Boston Budo was founded as Sanchin Martial Arts in 1979 by Duane Lucia. With his extensive study in movement education, sports psychology and Uechi Ryu Karate, Sensei Lucia based the club's foundation on Sanchin, one of the oldest and most widely practiced martial arts forms. The club is currently family owned and operated by his son Noah Lucia. Duane Lucia began studying Uechi Ryu in 1972 with Sensei Al Ford, who was one of George Mattson's first students. Sensei Mattson is well-known for popularizing Uechi Ryu in the United States, having been the first American to teach the Okinawan style after learning from Grandmaster Kanei Uechi during the 1950's. It was Kanei's father Kanbum Uechi who had travelled to China from Okinawa in the late 19th century to study Pan Gai Noon with Shushiwa (Zhou Zihe), a highly regarded Chinese master. After returning home he would develop what is now known as Uechi Ryu Karate-Do.
