Founded in 1992, BELL is a nonprofit organization that helps children achieve academic and social proficiency during their elementary school years. It undertakes various projects to increase the academic achievements, self-esteem and life opportunities of children living in low-income, urban communities. It also organizes several programs, including After School and Summer programs, Bell Boys and The Red Sox Scholars Program. The organization employs a number of tools, such as tutoring in math with research-based and multicultural curricula; mentoring; inviting guest speakers; field trips; and service projects. It also provides counseling and support for parents to facilitate their children s education. The organization consists of more than 1,000 teachers and tutors and educates more than 8,000 children in nearly 40 public school sites. It has offices in Dorchester, Mass.; Bronx, N.Y.; and Baltimore.
