The 40&8 Maryland Box Care is an independent honor organization of male and female U.S. veterans, known as the Forty Eight, committed to charitable and patriotic aims. Founded in 1920 by American veterans returning from France, the organization upholds and defends the United States Constitution, promotes the well-being of veterans and their families, and actively participates in selected charitable endeavors.
The Maryland Merci Car, located at The Baltimore Ohio Museum, is a part of the Merci Train, a train of 49 French railroad box cars filled with gifts of gratitude from individual French citizens. The Merci Train arrived in New York harbor in 1949, and each of the 48 American states at that time received one of the gift-laden box cars, with the 49th box car shared by Washington D.C. and the Territory of Hawaii.
