Opened in 1971, Shady Side Elementary School enrolls more than 400 students in kindergarten through grade five. It operates several academic departments, such as language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. The school additionally has art, music and physical education specialists. Shady Side Elementary School also offers the English for Speakers of Other Languages program and gifted and talented education. It supports band and strings clubs. The school s media center houses a library classroom, video-viewing and storytelling areas and over 10 computer laboratories. Its other features include a puppet theater, school's weather station, and shelving that comprises a collection of books and audiovisual media resources. The media center hosts faculty and parent-teacher meetings, luncheons, tea parties and puppet play performances.
