In 1886, Elizabeth and Peter Schmidt started a small retail baking business in their home in Baltimore using family bread recipes that Elizabeth brought to America from her native Germany. She baked delicious loaves of bread in her kitchen, and Peter Schmidt delivered them fresh daily by horse and buggy to their satisfied customers. More than 100 years later, more than 860 Schmidt Baking Company employees, including fourth and fifth generation Schmidt family members, are still committed to baking quality products and delivering them fresh to satisfied customers. Just a few of the company s breads include a white, potato, butter, Italian and Sunbeam.
